This is "a sort of Festschrift volume, consisting of some six very miscellaneous contributions in honour of the seventy-fifth birthday of Professor William J. Rose, a native Canadian with a notable record in the field of Polish studies" (p. 9). The common element underlying all six studies in the book is their preocupation with the history of the Polish Canadians and with mutual relationship between Poland and Canada. This bibliography is the first volume that lists publications combining in some way a Canadian and a Polish factor. Their presence may be revealed by the language in which the book was written, or into which it was translated; by the ethnic origin of the author, joint author, editor or translator; by the place of publication, or by the subject-matter of the publication. This is a biography of Sir Casimir Stanislaw Gzowski, who is the most famous Pole in the history of Polish immigration to Canada. He was a lawyer and engineer responsible for such great projects as the International Bridge on the Niagara River. He organized the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers, where he served as its president, and founded Canada's first rifle association. He was also the first Commissioner of the Niagara Parks Commission. The book describes his life since his arrival in America after the Polish revolt against Russia in 1830. This brochure is based on Wojciechowski's essay presented at the 23rd Annual Adam Mickiewicz Memorial Lecture at Carleton University in Ottawa. It discusses the communist regime in Poland and the situation there in the early 1990. when rapid and profound changes were taking place. The author analyzes political, economic and cultural crises - outcomes of those changes. He believes that that "Poland is in an in-between state, the process of change is far from over. There are many unpredictable factors: internal and external which may impact its situation in unforeseeable ways" (p. 22). (Year of Publication: 1992)
